IMG_2754 [640x480]Named Restuarant of the Year by the Age and GT two years in a row makes QUAY my to eat list when I go to Sydney.  I went there with high expectations and I feared the Quay would disappoint me, especially with the weird decor they had- tacky plastic shower curtains-like decorations, mirror on the ceiling..etc… yikes.  But you know what, the decor is the only “disappointment” for the night.  The evening’s dinner is sublime, the service is friendly, knowledgeable but unintruding.

In the evening you can choose either a dinner menu ($155 for 4 courses) or their signature menu ($210 for 8 courses).  Both menu features modern Australia style food with an Asian influence.  For those who know me, I am extremely cautious about “Asian influence” as normally it means asian food being screwed up beyond recognition- but this meal is beyond my imagination and took Asian cuisine to the next level.IMG_2757 [640x480]

We chose the 4 course dinner.  The amuse bouche is tuna with tapioca “pearls”.  It was beautifully presented with a delicate little flower on top.  The tuna is so fresh which just a hint of saltiness, with the chewy texture of the pearls and the creme fraiche it makes a yummy play on textures.  This certainly sets the scene of what is to come next.

Our entree is Sea Pearls ($20 supplement)- 5 colourful round balls, the treasures of the sea.  Clockwise from the top there’s salty tuna & caviar; the smokey octopus, egg white and smoked eel; subtle mud crab with tapioca pearls; abalone suspended in dashi consumme; sea scallops w/wasabi flowers.  This looks so beautiful that I stared at it for ages before I ate it!

Second course, Hubby had  crisp confit of pig belly, braise of abalone and cuttlefish, handmade silken tofu, Japanese mushrooms, chive flowers.  This is so delicious also, but Hubby teased me by just giving me a little tiny bit at a time, so I couldn’t really taste the true mixture of flavours and textures :( Yet what I had was fantastic, the crispy suckling pig is not too fatty.

My second course was the Five textures of Southern rock lobster.

Clear lobster bisque with silken tofu at the bottom which absorbs all the flavours of the lobster bisque.
Sitting next to this bisque is a trio of lobster texture: lobster foam at the top with some snow pea sprouts, a disc of lobster meat and lastly lobster dumpling in the bottom.
I love the intensity of the lobster bisque and the tofu that absorbed all the essence, but after having that the trio of lobster texture tasted a bit bland.  I wonder if I should have eaten the trio first…

For the third course hubby had Free range chicken breast cooked sous vide style, truffle butter, baby radish, spring onions, garden peas, garlic cream, pea shoots.  The chicken is so tender, and although poached, so flavoursome.  Once again this dish is dotted with pretty miniature flowers and micro vegies that features in so many Peter Gilmore’s dish.

My third course is a Bass Groper, parsley crust, slow braise of baby abalone, periwinkles,  sea scallop, winter melon, hasuimo, green tea and seaweed consomme.

This dish is very gingery which is normally a flavour I dislike, but this dish is so fresh and simple that I love it.

To choose a favourite dish would be hard, but the desserts are the grand finale of this decadent four course dinner.

A pile of raspberries, violet, almond, vanilla cream sitting prettily on a plate is hubby’s choice of dessert.  There is a fresh burst of flavours in every bite.  It is especially good with the Moscato di Asti.  Yum!

Eight texture chocolate cake featuring Amedei ‘Chuao’ Chocolate- yum yum!  I love chocolates and I’ve heard other diners raving about it.  It started out perfect- a smooth disc of dark chocolate covered what lies underneath.  Then the waiters pour molten chocolate into the centre and the middle just melts…divine…

Portello Rosso
15 Warburton Lane, Melbourne

I always thought Portello Rosso is simply a Jamon and Pizza bar, not thinking that it would ever be any more than that. But I was wrong- so wrong. Portello Rosso took us through a Culinary Journey through Southern Europe, an 8 course degustation menu with matching wines, from France to Portugal, Spain and Italy.

France

Pickled oyster with zucchini capellini and caviar- for people who know me, I don’t eat oysters. Other than the one in Good Taste, which is really fresh and cooked through, I don’t eat oyster. Yesterday, at Portello Rosso, I broke my record by actually eating one whole raw oyster- extremely fresh, and although there is a slight oystery fishy aftertaste, it’s still really fresh. Love the zucchini capellini, which are tiny ribbons of zucchini underneath the oyster. YUM!
Grilled Quail w/ pan fried foie gras and baby vegies- I almost used my hands to eat this- it was just yum. The Quail is cooked in this slightly sweet sauce, so succulent and tasty! It’s really good with the foie gras too- I thought the double animal selection would be too much for me, but I love it.

Portugal

Seafood acorda with poached egg- This is a Portuguese seafood soup with this huge prawn, scallop and lobster. A very subtle soup based really made all the fresh seafood pop out. Too bad the scallop is cold in the middle. I can understand room temp soup w/ room temp seafood, as this is a Portuguese dish, but cold is weird. There’s also no poached egg :( I know egg is like, a five cent thing, but both Hubby and I love eggs so this is disappointing. In saying that, the prawn- once again I don’t eat prawns, but I was sucking on the head of the prawn- it’s not very lady-like but it was soooo yummie.
Bife com batatas- Beef and potatoes! Hubby’s favourite! And it was another perfect dish. Some might think that it’s a bit rare, but I love it- it’s really tender.

Spain

Jamon iberico de bellota and roquette salad- I don’t really like jamon to be honest, I found it too salty in big portions. This dish is not that bad- the rocket and the tangy dressing did the trick of balancing out the saltiness. Too bad the hazelnut bits tastes a bit stale and ruined the dish- if it’s not fresh, it’s better not to use it.
Slow roasted Otway Pork belly w/ fresh pear and bee-sting sorbet- I am not a huge fan of pork and I am getting full, very full in fact (and maybe quite drunk), so I didn’t finish the whole dish, however, the contrast of this dish is quite clever. The texture of the crispy pork skin, slippery sorbet on top. Hot salty pork, cold sweet sorbet. Very interesting.

Italy

We are approaching the end of our journey now and I wanted something light. Alas, out comes pots of rich gnocchi with 3 cheeses. This is so so rich and I thought I can’t eat it. But the beautiful smell teased me, it entices me to try one bite, then one gnocchi and the next thing I knew, I finished the whole pot bar one where Hubby stole it from me! Although I had indigestion all night eating so much food, I was STILL craving for the gnocchi today.
Must say the dessert is slightly disappointing because it is so simple, but it was a blessing in disguise. A dessert platter of chocolate binge, vanilla cannolli and assorted biscotti. If it was a tiramisu, I would probably be having a huge stomach cramps and bent over the toilet in the middle of the night! (sorry about the image!) Anyhoo, back to the dessert. The “assorted biscotti” means everyone gets something different. Someone got macaroons but not me :( Which is so sad- for me. Happily I got this yummie citrusy biscuit when I really need something tangy to finish off my meal. I didn’t like the vanilla cannolli as much- still feel like something citrusy. But chocolate binge- well chocolate binge I can’t resist. Chocolate porfitroles with chocolate oozing out of it… yummmmm

I love talking about service so here is my opinion. We came in 15 mins early and got turned away cos they are “almost ready”. Then when we sat down at 7pm they told us that there’s a second sitting at 9pm so please excuse us if we are rushing you off- well I supposed at least they tell us, but it really felt like a naughty girl trying to juggle two dates in one night, which does not make a good first impression. The first 4 courses came at a leisurely pace of 1hr20mins, leaving us with 40mins to eat our last four courses and pay the bill. Of course there were no time for “would you like some coffee or tea?” which may disappoint some but we didn’t really mind. In saying that, overall the wait staff remained calm and courteous, it’s just that in the last 40 mins it felt like someone has pressed the fast forward button- the staff and speed of food came out in a comical speed. Don’t think that patrons can’t feel the heat rising, not only did we feel it but the table next to us did, no matter how calm they have presented themselves. Doesn’t help when every 5 seconds they have to shoo off the 9pm crowd who are impatiently waiting outside either. Overall, the food is great and I would really love to see all those dishes in their regular menu from now on. The pace of the food needs to be quicker if they have double booked themselves. 7/10
