I finally went to Chouquette after recommending it to Monkylicious ages and ages ago. I have looked at blog after blog of Chouquette images whilst always wondering why the hell did they not open a shop when I was still living in Brisbane, or perhaps, open a shop in Melbourne?! Then when I got to Brisbane for a holiday, they were closed. How dare they?

Anyway angst aside, I finally got there, on my very last day of the trip, when they finally open up again. I am in patisserie heaven! We ordered the must-have strawberry tart- Oh My God it was soooo good. They must have used the freshest strawberries- it is soooo sweet and no, they did not use syrup to artifically sweeten it. There’s a thick bit of custard that nestled in between the strawberry and the tart, I’ve forgotten how much I loooovvveee custard, esp this one. I still think I like the base in Belle Epoque more, but this is definitely scoring a high 9.8/10.
Then god decided to let me have a peek of heaven by presenting me a Millefeuille. Apparently Millefeuille means a thousand leaves, and at Chouquette it’s layers and layers of beautiful, crunchy, light pastry with layers of vanilla custard. I was worried that this pastry would be a bit too sweet for my liking but it’s actually quite light and it’s not sweet at all. I was extremely, extremely tempted to buy another one and only sheer willpower prevented me from doing it. Can I give it 15 out of 10? Of course I can! :P

Special thanks to Monkylicious who called and pestered Chouquette to open for me, then drove me all the way there.

Choquette has been on my list of “must eats” for a long time now. I am so sad that it has taken me this long to make the 15 minute drive to go there. First I had found it during an online search for yummy Brisbane eats. Then Piggy sent me a photo of something chocolately and delicious her friend had bought there and asked me to check it out. Still I hadn’t made the time to go. Then at Yang from if90‘s birthday he had Chouquette birthday cakes on offer, I had the strawberry cake (at first bite, all other memories of cake and strawberries faded into nothingness to be replaced by this single moment in time). Yes, THE strawberry cake.

Not too long after this life-changing moment, I found myself driving towards Teneriffe, past the ACTUAL street where Chouquette lay waiting for me. A failed attempt at reverse parking and seeing that the store appeared the be closed led me to give it a miss and go to my appointment in the next suburb. On the way back however, something pulled at my heartstrings urging me to try again. This time I discovered the store was indeed open (I was looking at the wrong shopfront) and also some parking around the back of the store. YAY!!!!!!!!!

With 10 minutes till closing, I still managed to spend $50 on a variety of sugary delights.

My shopping cart:

1 Vanilla Eclair
1 Strawberry Tart
3 Apple Crumble Tarts
1 Choux pastry with a hazelnut cream
4 Almond Croissants

I only had a small bite of the eclair as that was claimed by my sister, but I do recall much yumminess. (No photo unfortunately, as it was devoured too quickly)

Strawberry Tart - Chouquette

The strawberry tart was simply beautiful. The tart base was not too thick as I often find with fruit tarts and the strawberries were sweet!

Choux Pastry with Cream - Chouquette

The Choux Pastry with hazelnut cream… this was really nice. The cream was quite rich and I’m a sucker for cream puff type desserts. I did make the mistake of eating this for breakfast though, which seemed like a good idea at the time… but the sugary headache that proceeded it proved otherwise.

Apple Crumble Tart - Chouquette

Apple crumble tarts… OH MY GOD! I’m so glad I bought 3. These are fantastic. You just have to go eat one to see for yourself. They are also extra yummy when eaten with a high quality vanilla ice cream.

Almond croissants.. I LOVE almond croissants. My first experience of them was when Piggy took me to a little bakery in Raby Bay (which I will one day find again) just to buy some. Chouquette’s almond croissants rekindled my love of these with supporting testimony from my husband-to-be who I’m pretty sure ate most of them over the next few days.

Its best to eat everything as soon as possible (which you will most certainly do regardless). But because I’d bought so many things we ate them over a few days. While they are still fine to eat, the tart pastry does get a bit more tough, but by then we had decided to add ice cream, so no one cared.

Right now I’m trying to list all the occassions coming up that require dessert. I hope you don’t wait as long as I did to get to Chouquette. I have been advised that weekends at Chouquette are ridiculously busy, particularly since we are in the festive season, but if that’s the only time you can make it there, I’m sure you will find it VERY worth the wait.
