For those who haven’t heard of Lux Bite, you are totally missing out. Ex- Comme pastry chef Bernard and ex- Rockpool pastry chef Yen recently opened up their beautiful cake and macaron shop amoungst the “Lux” shops in Toorak road.
Opened for a week, it was already visited by many pastry royalties and of course a very curious piggy! There are not a lot of cakes and macaron selection on display just yet, but the chefs assured me that there will be more flavours coming soon.
We did visit because of the macarons, but you know what? I almost got swayed by their cakes. There’s a mango roll cake, with passionfruit curd , which I really really really wanted to try. Then again there are also ferror roche cakes and dainty, beautiful fruit tarts… OMG I should have come with an empty stomach!
I persisted and ordered the macarons
(of course it helps when they ARE doing a special that week! hehe!)
Pictured left is what we have ordered. On the front left hand side, you would have probably guessed, is the watermelon and yoghurt macaron. The watermelon and yoghurt macaron is TOTALLY cute- and it tasted refreshingly like watermelon but has a bit of creaminess in it. I love love love it.
On the left handside behind the watermelon, is the peanut butter and jelly macaron. Peanut butter- how I love peanut butter! My fav M&M is peanut butter, if I didn’t have to watch my weight I would have eaten peanut butter by spoonfuls every day, so imagine my excitement when I see peanut butter macarons!!!! It was, as I imagined, delicious. The macaron oozes with intense peanut butter flavours, aptly sweetened by the jelly. This is my favourite macaron and I could have happily eaten 50 of those.
Next to it was the milk chocolate macaron, which was surprisingly rich and non-milky. Hubby reckons that this is his favourite macaron (although he had trouble deciding between this one and the peanut butter one). I find it a bit too sweet and too rich myself so I gave most of it back to Hubby, which he happily devoured.
Last, but not least, is Lux Bite’s signature macaron- the Kaya Toast. Yen enthusiastically told me that kaya toast is a Malaysian specialty- and they included some toasted breadcrumb into the almond meal to enhance the crunchiness. Then, they spread Bernard’s grandfather’s secret Kaya recipe on to the macaron shell and include a thick piece of butter in between it. YUMMMM- the kaya tasted smooth and coconuty and that butter just melts in your mouth. We couldn’t actually taste or detect any crunchy toasty textures and flavours though, but it was still a fantastic piece of macaron.
You can definitely see a lot of heart and attention to detail put into this shop- from the decor to the display fridges, from the beautiful cakes to the awesome macarons. The two chef proudly show us their specialtydisplay unit, although not yet in function, will hopefully soon be displaying the colourful macarons. I really can’t wait to come back and try all their other flavours and bring everyone here! 9/10
